We are delighted to present screenings of classics directed by and starring guests of this year’s Festival edition in the exceptional natural surroundings.
The film program will open with THE PAINTED VEIL, featuring this year’s master at Ponta Lopud, Edward Norton, in the lead role. John Curran’s film is a romantic and psychologically nuanced odyssey of a married couple amidst turbulent historical events. Alongside Edward Norton, Naomi Watts also stars in this tale of love, betrayal, and forgiveness.
On the second Festival evening, we will have a screening of Michel Franco’s film AFTER LUCIA, which won the main prize in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival. The loss of a loved one and the attempt to cope with that grief are at the heart of this drama, which also addresses the very topical issue of peer violence. The film was the Mexican entry for the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 2012 Oscars.
Next, we have the screening of FORCE MAJEURE, directed by Ruben Östlund. The film provides an excellent analysis of male-female relationships and follows a young Swedish family on a relaxed vacation in the French Alps until one morning, an artificially induced avalanche spirals out of control and heads towards the terrace where the characters are having lunch. After that, nothing is the same for the family. FORCE MAJEURE premiered in the Un Certain Regard program at Cannes, where it won the Jury Prize. In addition to being nominated for the prestigious Golden Globe, it also made the shortlist for the Oscars.
Juho Kuosmanen directed THE HAPPIEST DAY IN THE LIFE OF OLLI MÄKI. It’s a story about a renowned Finnish boxer who, at the beginning of his professional life, faces the current world champion in the featherweight category. Although he experiences a humiliating defeat in the second round in front of a packed stadium, Olli Mäki later claims that it was the best day of his life. The film premiered at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Best Film Award in the Un Certain Regard section.
The closing night of the third edition of the Ponta Lopud Festival is reserved for the TRIANGLE OF SADNESS by Ruben Östlund. This social satire questions class roles and exposes the vulgarity of extreme wealth. The setting is a cruise ship that gets stranded on a deserted island far from civilization. At that moment, social roles are reversed, and the crew, consisting of resourceful and practical people, begins to dominate over the snobbish guests. The film won the Palme d’Or, four major European Film Awards, and received three Oscar nominations.
