The fourth day of the festival started with a masterclass attended by all invited participants. With the excellent moderation of the award-winning Pawel Pawlikowski, Ruben Östlund recounted his journey from the world of skiing to the realm of film, highlighting the early stages of his career primarily focused on documentary films. He emphasized the influence of advancing film technology on the development of certain cinematic styles. With inputs from Edward Norton and Pawel Pawlikowski, he compared the financing of the American and European film industries and how it impacts the directorial and thematic adaptations of films for a wider audience, in terms of their commercial viability. In conclusion, he stated that test screenings and the initial audience reactions are invaluable to a film’s success.
In the afternoon, Edward Norton conducted a masterclass for participants in the “Acting” category, while Ruben Östlund held a session for directors moderated by filmmaker Ognjen Glavonić. Additionally, Urszula Pontikos conducted another workshop in the series for cinematographers.
Following a lunch organized by Saints Hills Winery at the Lopud restaurant La Villa, a wine tasting event took place in the enchanting setting of Đorđić Mayneri Park. The tasting was expertly and amusingly led by one of the most esteemed wine connoisseurs, a renowned sommelier and the first wine academic in the region, Mira Šemić, alongside the young winemaker Lucia Tolj. They presented select Saints Hills wines: Posh, Sv. Roko, Dingač, and St. Heels, which delighted all guests with their refined bouquet and distinct aromas.
Traditionally, the planting of the third festival palm took place in Đorđić Mayneri Park. Through this act, Ponta Lopud Festival expresses gratitude to the local community for wholeheartedly embracing the event and leaves a lasting reminder of the beautiful and thrilling festival days. In a continuation of the tradition, this year’s masters, Edward Norton and Ruben Östlund, had the privilege of planting the palm, following in the footsteps of renowned director Pawel Pawlikowski and acclaimed actress Frances McDormand, who had the honor in previous years.
The evening hours were reserved for the Tuna show organized by the restaurant Bowa, featuring exclusively fresh seafood delicacies for which the restaurant is renowned.
The day concluded with a screening of the film THE HAPPIEST DAY IN THE LIFE OF OLLI MÄKI on the beach of the RMH Lopud Lafodia Resort & Wellness Hotel. Before the screening, Juho Kuosmanen addressed the audience, expressing how Ponta Lopud is his favourite festival, which is quite interesting considering that he himself organizes a film festival. “All young people who are starting their careers need courage, and this film precisely tells that story, it’s the story of courage,” said the Finnish director.
